Description
Graviola belongs to a group of plants that are trees and shrubs found growing mainly in the tropics.
Many members of this family, such as Graviola, bear fruits that have become regular food items for people in places such as Africa, South America and the West Indies. Graviola fruits are also known as soursop or custard apple.
Most Graviola products available nowadays are made from the fruit, however, in traditional medicine, all parts of the Graviola tree, leaves, seeds, roots and fruit have been used medicinally.
The different parts of Graviola have been used to treat many problems. it has been used as an anti-arthritic, anti-epileptic, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, as a pain killer, anti-hypertensive, antiparasitic, to protect the liver, as a wound healer, anti-malarial, anti-parasitic, antidepressant and to protect the lining of the stomach! It also has a reputation for treating various cancers.
The main constituents of Graviola are the annonaceous acetogenins. Over 100 of them have been isolated from the different parts of the plant. Other constituents are the antioxidant phenolic
compounds such as rutin, kaempferol and quercetin, essential oil, alkaloids and minerals including Mg, Fe and Ca.
Antioxidants and the foods containing them are being investigated in great detail nowadays as oxidative stress contributes to so many degenerative diseases, especially with our stressed out, junk food ridden and polluted life-styles. Antioxidants help to remove toxins, protect cells from damage and reduce inflammation, thus protecting our cardiovascular system, nervous system and other organs.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Graviola research is that an awful lot of testing has been done in the lab rather than clinical trials in people.
